The Pacific Hagfish
One of Earth's most ancient vertebrates, the hagfish provides a rare evolutionary window into the origins of the opioid system. Its opioid receptors likely represent the ancestral state from which all vertebrate opioid pharmacology descended, which is what makes it such an irreplaceable model organism.
